This vegan citrus chocolate cake is a delightful combination of rich chocolate flavor with bright citrus notes. The orange and lemon zest add a refreshing and aromatic touch, while the fresh orange and lemon juices provide a tangy contrast to the sweetness of the cake.

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegan chocolate chips (optional, for topping)
For the Glaze:
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • Zest of 1 orange (for garnish)


  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan or line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, orange zest, lemon zest, fresh orange juice, fresh lemon juice, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
  6. If desired, sprinkle vegan chocolate chips on top of the batter.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  9. While the cake is cooling, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and 1-2 tablespoons of fresh orange juice until smooth.
  10. Once the cake has cooled slightly, drizzle the glaze over the top of the cake.
  11. Garnish with additional orange zest.
  12. Allow the cake to cool completely before serving.
