  • 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed
  • 1/4 cup tahini (sesame seed paste)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 2-4 tablespoons water, as needed
  • Optional toppings: extra-virgin olive oil, paprika, chopped fresh parsley, toasted sesame seeds


  1. In a food processor, combine the drained and rinsed chickpeas, tahini, minced garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, ground cumin, and salt.
  2. Process the mixture until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides of the food processor as needed.
  3. If the hummus is too thick, gradually add 2-4 tablespoons of water, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
  4. Taste the hummus and adjust the seasoning with more salt or lemon juice if needed.
  5. Transfer the creamy classic hummus to a serving bowl.
  6. Drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil and sprinkle with paprika, chopped fresh parsley, or toasted sesame seeds for garnish, if desired.
  7. Serve the ultimate creamy classic hummus with pita bread, crackers, sliced vegetables, or use it as a spread in sandwiches or wraps.
