Pomegranate extract is associated with promoting better eye health.

A recent research article featured in the Journal of Clinical and Translational Ophthalmology highlights the anti-inflammatory properties of Euromed’s Pomanox® in a common cellular model used to test eye damage and irritation. This study introduces the possibility that pomegranate extract could serve as an ocular anti-inflammatory agent, potentially catering to the expanding eye health market.

The study specifically aimed to assess the anti-inflammatory effects of Pomanox® on cytokine secretion in a model involving reconstituted human corneal epithelial cells (SkinEthic™ HCE), a recognized in-vitro method for assessing the impact of various substances on eye irritation or damage. Results indicated that the presence of Pomanox® significantly reduced the production of the cytokine interleukin-8 (IL-8) after inducing inflammation caused by bacterial material in the corneal cells. This reduction surpassed that achieved by a conventional anti-inflammatory substance. Furthermore, the cells treated with Pomanox® displayed a higher percentage of viability, suggesting that the extract better preserved cell survival compared to other conditions.

Pomegranate, known for its historical use in traditional medicine, influences diverse cellular pathways, particularly those associated with oxidative stress and inflammatory processes. This attribute stems from punicalagins, potent antioxidants found in nature. Euromed’s Pomanox® contains up to 30% punicalagins and has been the focus of numerous clinical studies, showcasing its benefits for cardiovascular health, cognition, skin health, sports performance, satiety, and mood enhancement.

Andrea Zangara, Head of Scientific Communication & Medical Affairs and a co-author of the study, emphasizes the limited data on how pomegranate may support eye health. Previous studies mainly concentrated on its antioxidant activity rather than its anti-inflammatory potential in corneal tissue. This recent study, however, demonstrates promising evidence for its potential application in promoting eye health, which holds significance in light of the aging population and the prevalent use of screens in our daily lives, making vision health a critical concern for consumers globally.
