Below is a typical scientifically based recommendation for BCAA use and appropriate for InstAminos®:

  • The optimal time to take BCAAs is still being determined, but studies suggest that it may make little difference whether BCAA supplements are taken before, during, or after exercise. However, taking BCAAs before exercise may be the most critical time to get a 6-10-gram dose of BCAAs.
  • The recommended dosage of BCAAs may vary depending on body weight and goals. A recent review of studies found that consuming a daily dose of at least 91 mg per pound (200 mg per kg) of body weight may be important for limiting exercise-related muscle damage through BCAA supplements. For example, if you weigh 165 pounds (75 kg), you must take a dose of at least 15 grams (15,000 mg) of BCAAs daily. Another source recommends taking 10 grams of BCAAs before, during, and after training if you weigh 150 pounds or less and 15 grams before, during, and after training if you weigh 151 pounds or more.
  • It is important to get ample amounts of all three BCAAs (leucine, isoleucine, and valine) in the proper ratio. A 2-1-1 ratio of leucine to isoleucine to valine is recommended, with 6 grams of BCAAs providing about 3 grams of leucine and 1.5 grams each of isoleucine and valine. The highest recommended ratio is 3-1-1, particularly post-workout, when leucine drives muscle protein synthesis.
  • BCAAs can be taken as a pre-workout, intra-workout, or post-workout supplement. It is important to cycle BCAA intake to create a true spike in muscle protein synthesis, with a couple of hours between doses. BCAAs can also be taken throughout the day for extra benefit.
  • BCAAs are effective in helping to build and repair muscle damage from intense sessions. They can also help decrease delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and enhance fat oxidation in glycogen-depleted subjects. BCAAs can be used as an energy source for working muscles because of their unique metabolism.

It is important to note that the optimal dosage and timing of BCAA supplementation may vary depending on the individual’s needs and goals, and it is always important to follow the recommended dosage instructions on the label of any supplement and to consult with a healthcare practitioner before starting any new supplement regimen.

InstAminos® is available in products that feature the ingredient by itself, usually as a flavored drink and most often as part of a formula. In such a case, observe the labels’ dosage protocol.

Anyone considering BCAA supplementation should be aware of the following:

  • BCAAs are generally safe when used as directed, although rarely, they may cause side effects in some people. These side effects may include fatigue, loss of coordination, stomach problems (such as nausea, diarrhea, and bloating), and muscle cramps. BCAAs should be used cautiously before or during activities that require motor coordination, such as driving.
  • BCAAs may interfere with blood glucose levels during and after surgery, so it is important to inform your healthcare practitioner if you are taking BCAAs before undergoing surgery.
  • BCAAs may interact with certain medications, such as levodopa. They may affect blood sugar levels, so it is important to consult with a healthcare practitioner before taking BCAAs if you are taking medication or have a medical condition.
  • BCAAs should not be used as a stand-alone supplement to replace a balanced diet. Consuming protein-rich foods will also provide you with other important nutrients that BCAA supplements lack.
  • BCAAs may not be safe for individuals with a rare congenital disorder called maple syrup urine disease, as their bodies cannot break down BCAAs properly.
  • It is important to follow the recommended dosage instructions on the label of any supplement and to consult with a healthcare practitioner before starting any new supplement regimen, especially if you have a medical condition or are taking medication.

It is important to note that the optimal dosage and timing of BCAA supplementation may vary depending on the individual’s needs and goals, and it is always important to follow the recommended dosage instructions on the label of any supplement and to consult with a healthcare practitioner before starting any new supplement regimen.
